About Abuse

Somenos Transition House

Do you feel trapped...intimidated...isolated...
controlled...exhausted...

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

Relationshop violence is abuse of one person by another.

Relationship violence often takes the form of physical assault, including punching, kicking, choking, burning, biting, confining, using objects as weapons, rape and manipulating or forcing sexual activity.

Abuse in relationships also includes emotional or psychological abuse, including threats to harm a woman, her family, friends or pets; destruction of her clothes or other belongings or threats of it; belittling, insulting or yelling; emotional withdrawal (silent treatment), intimidation, isolating from friends and family, jealousy and controlling or manipulative behaviour, telling her what she can or can't wear, criticizing her appearance or body, name-calling, treating her as inferior, or threats to 'out' her if she is lesbian or transgendered.

Abuse can be financial - not sharing in family financial decision-making, forcing her to account for all the money she spends, making her ask, beg or justify what she needs or wants, not allowning access to family money.
  • Abuse can be physical, sexual or verbal behaviour to coerce or humiliate.
  • Abuse can be emotional or psychological
  • Abuse often occurs in a cycle (incident, 'honeymoon', build-up; incident, 'honeymoon', buildup...)
  • Abuse can be deadly
  • The purpose of abuse is to maintain power and control over one's lover/partner or other close person.
  • The abused person feels - and is encouraged to feel - alone, isolated, and afraid. She is usually convinced that somehow the abuse was her fault, or that it could have been avoided if only she had known what to do.
No one deserves to be abused.
